Learning to Draw 5.1

Hello guys it's been a while again. Doing a new 11 O'clock Comics sketchbook challenge this month. Spider-Man villains first up is Hammerhead. Thought he was gonna be easy and then noticed he always wears a pinstripe suit. I have a lot more respect for people who draw gangster comics now.
This is just the pencils I'll post the finished thing later.

When Gods Die

Today I woke up to the news of the passing of Gene Colan, a comic book legend whose works include The Tomb Of Dracula and some excellent runs of 80's Batman. The news hit me hard. Harder than they should all things considered. You see I haven't really read that many stories that Gene Colan has illustrated. The few things I have read defined an era and the horror comic book genre for me when I was young. But it's strange how sad the passing of a stranger can make me. I've recently noticed, with the passing of such luminaries as Dwayne McDuffieand now Gene Colan, that it's the deaths of creators that seem to get to me. I think it's the fact that the creativity of these brilliant individuals is suddenly denied to us completely. Ofcourse they will be remembered through their art and stories that aren't going anywhere, but there won't be anything new coming from them. Their worlds won't expand anymore they are now limited to what they are as before there was this infinite potential..

Rest In Peace Gene You will be remembered.

Learning to draw...

I really would like to be able to draw things a bit better, and as this is a skill that can be acquired only through practice I intend to do so. Here's Captain Marvel and any tips anyone can give are much appreciated.

Reboot

I just realised this a few days ago: Blogging can be difficult. My problem is probably that I've tried to focus my blog onto one subject , which would be fine if I didn't have the attention span of a fly. But I like to to write about all kinds of things limiting myself to just one thing is just silly. So here we go reboot for this blog is underway.

My life in music - In The beginning there was... Santana?

I got the idea for this from a Moleskine music notebook that I got from my girlfriend, but I'm kind of getting ahead of myself here aren't I ? My idea is to go through my life in chronological order looking at The music that I've listened no matter how painful It may seem sometimes. The first entry will be quite brief, but I believe that I will gain momentum through the years and I will have more and more to say about the music that has affected me through the ages.

Yours truly at a young age.

So to start this off. From my earliest days, when I don't think I could actually even distinguish music from any other noise I'll start from the album that is the first one that I've heard connected to myself and which I have ret-conned to be significant to myself and I guess it is. Apparently when I was a baby I quite often went to sleep to the sweet sounds of Santana's Abraxas, in retrospect I think it may have been the wind chimes, although the whole album is so incredibly smooth that you might think it's gone through a blender.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't the cover.

Now to explain how this came to be I should probably tell you a little about my parents so here we go. My dad was a little bit of a hippie back in the day and he was heavily into Zappa, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd and a lot of prog-rock of the time. Later on he got into blues and even some country and these days I have to say that his tastes are pretty eclectic. My mother wasn't that much of a hippie and didn't really like Zappa that much either, but she does say that these days whenever she hears Zappa it gives her a sort cozy homey feeling because she's listened to so much ow it. To the best of my knowledge the only record she owned back in the olden days was a Cat Stevens best of album which could have been a worse pick in all honesty. These days she seems to listen to whatever is playing on the radio, or whatever my dad chooses to subject her to.

Anyway so my musical journey starts with Santana, a long haired hippie with incredible rhythm sections , which is a bit ironic considering that I don't seem to have rhythm in a single bone in my body . I'm not sure if the music itself has affected me that much, but the knowledge of having been soothed by something like this as a baby has definitely formed a bond between me and Santana's music. I'm sort of curious about whether I actually slept through the whole album or if they only played the first side of the record because side 2 rocks a bit harder than the first one. There is something comforting about the whole idea and I can't go without thinking about it whenever I hear Santana.

I'm now relistening the album after a long while as I'm writing this and I have to say that I'm sort of rediscovering it here. Abraxas has incredible energy and positivity about it and the energy seems channeled in just the right balance to soothe the soul, but then brings out the wild rhythms that just start to move your feet as if by magic. And I guess it sort of is...

This first entry is, as I said earlier a bit thin, but I think I have more to say about music that comes later and I'm sure there will be much more in-depth posts later on. I'd love to hear if anyone else has similar stories or any opinions you might have so if anyone actually reads this little mess Comment away !
